Whilst socialising with friends from the private sector, the conversation drifts to work and someone decides to create a stir. They express uncertainty about charities, declaring they cannot be trusted because such a large proportion of donations are spent on fundraising costs. This is a scenario which I am sure the majority of workers in the third sector have faced at some point in time and I would not judge anyone too harshly for feeling the need to fight their corner by simply proclaiming that these costs are very low in their organisation.

Whilst browsing through the social enterprise column on my TweetDeck I often find it cluttered with links to businesses involved in social networking, social media or social software. You may think this is simply down to my search criteria being too broad but unfortunately this is not the case. The massive technology multinational IBM, for instance, defines itself as a social business whilst Oracle and Salesforce.com call themselves social enterprises.
